Call Of The Day: Support The DREAM Act

On September 5th, Trump announced he was terminating the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

This Obama-era program provides relief from deportation for an estimated 800,000 young immigrants.  These immigrants have attended our schools, have lived and worked in our communities, and have raise families.  And now, they're at greater risk of deportation. Congress must act immediately to protect DREAMers.

There is bipartisan support for the current DREAM Act – S.1615 in the Senate and HR 3440 in the House.  And the bill enjoys massive support from the American public.  But neither of Louisiana's senators have signed onto the Senate version, and only Cedric Richmond has signed onto the House version.  Time to ask our Congressmen to do the right thing and take action.

WHO TO CALL:

Senators Kennedy and Cassidy; Representative Cedric Richmond or Representative Steve Scalise

Senator Bill Cassidy - DC Office:  (202) 224-5824; Metairie office:  (504) 838-0130; Monroe Office:  (318) 324-2111; Lake Charles Office:  (337) 493-5398; Alexandria Office:  (318) 448-7176

Senator John Kennedy - DC office:  (202) 224-4623; New Orleans Office:  (504) 581-6190; Lafayette Office:  (337) 269-5980; Monroe Office:  (318) 361-1489; Alexandria Office:  (318) 445-2892; Baton Rouge Office:  (225) 926-8033; Shreveport Office:  (318) 670-5192

Because of how Congressional districts are drawn, New Orleans residents have either Richmond or Scalise as their representative.  If you don't know who your representative is, you can look it up by entering your home address on the U.S. House of Representatives website.

Representative Cedric Richmond - in DC at (202) 225-6636, and in New Orleans at (504) 288-3777
OR
Representative Steve Scalise - in DC at (202) 225-3015, and in Metairie at (504) 837-1259

Reminders: Identify where you're calling from (town and zip code is fine) so they know you're an actual constituent.  Be concise – the office will get through more calls that way. Be polite and don't argue with the staffer – they don't set policy.  If you get a voicemail, then leave a message.  And if you get a busy signal – call back later!

Sample Script:

Hi, my name is [Your Name] from New Orleans, zip code 70118 [or wherever you're from].

I'm calling to urge the Congressman to cosponsor and support [House: HR 3440; Senate: S.1615], the DREAM Act of 2017.  There are 2,320 DACA recipients in Louisiana, and each year they pay almost $7.5 million in taxes.  There is massive bipartisan support for this bill in Congress and among the American public.  Please protect DREAMers from deportation by passing the Dream Act now.

[IF RICHMOND: Thank him for signing on to the House Dream Act, and ask him to urge the rest of the Louisiana delegation to do the same!]

Thank you for your time and your hard work answering the phones.  Stay safe out there.
