Call of the Day: Demand ICE Release Metairie Resident Heriberto Hernandez Perez

Last month, ICE arrested and detained Heriberto Hernandez Perez, an undocumented immigrant father and Metairie resident. The 44 year old father of three was dropping off his 12 year old son at middle school at the time. After his father was taken, Perez's son was dumped at the driveway of his house – ICE agents didn't even bother to knock on the door to let Perez's family know that he'd been taken, or that they'd dropped the boy off at home.

Perez first came to the country over a decade ago, and he has no criminal record. Yet a month later, he's still in a detention center, where he is suffering greatly due to inadequately treated health issues, like diabetes. You can read more about his story here: http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2017/04/jefferson_parish_immigration_a.html

We need to rally around Perez and his family right now, and show ICE that he has his community's support in his fight to remain. Please. This is one time when every call we can make will really count.

Who: New Orleans ICE Assistant Field Office Director Brian Acuña

Where: 504-520-0396

Reminders: Identify where you're calling from (town and zip code is fine) so they know you're an actual constituent. Be concise - the office will get through more calls that way. Be polite and don't argue with the staffer - they don't set policy.  If you get a voicemail, then leave a message. And if you get a busy signal -- call back later!

Sample script:

Hi, my name is [Name] from New Orleans, zip code 70118 [or wherever you're from]. I'm calling in support of Heriberto Hernandez Perez, whose A-Number is 205-507-825. I heard about how Heriberto was arrested in front of his 12-year-old son as he was taking him to school. This is unacceptable.

Heriberto has been in the U.S. for over ten years and has no criminal record. He's suffering greatly in detention due to serious health issues. His family needs him and his community needs him. Although he is potentially eligible for legal status, he fears he won't survive the wait while he's in detention. Please immediately grant Heriberto's prosecutorial discretion request. Thank you for your time.

You can also remind ICE that they're not supposed to do pick-ups at or around school grounds.
