Many, MANY of you have asked whether we can start doing more calls to our state legislators, since the legislature is in session right now. That's a great idea! To that end, we're going to start doing a once-weekly state-focused Call of the Day – starting today.
Lots of bills are before the state House and Senate right now. These three Senate bills caught my eye, as I know many of you are fighting for these very causes. They are:
SB 24: Bill to exempt menstrual hygiene products and diapers from state sales tax (aka, eliminate the "tampon tax")
SB142: Bill to abolish the death penalty
SB153: Bill to raise the minimum wage to $8.50/hr
Feel free to call your St. Senator about one, or all three.
If you don't know who your state senator is, go to www.legis.la.gov. Click on "Who are my Legislators?" on the left side of the Home page, enter your address. Then click on your State Senator's name to be taken to their websites and their contact info. It's actually really quick to do, promise.
WHO TO CALL (example – your reps may differ!):
State. SEN. Conrad Appel: (504) 838-5550
Reminders: Identify where you're calling from (town and zip code is fine) so they know you're an actual constituent. Only call your own representative. Be concise - the office will get through more calls that way. Be polite and don't argue with the staffer - they don't set policy. If you get a voicemail, then leave a message. And if you get a busy signal -- call back later!
Hi, my name is [Name] from New Orleans, zip code 70118 [or wherever you're from]. I don't need a response.
I'm calling because I want Senator [NAME] to vote YES on:
SB 24, to eliminate the "tampon tax"
SB 142, to abolish the death penalty
SB 153, to raise the minimum wage to $8.50/hr
I believe strongly in this bill, and I'm eager to see what position the Senator will take. Thank you for your time and your work answering phones.
