Call of the Day: Defend The ACA... Again

House Republicans are trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA)—again. And they're getting close, too. Real close.

This version of the AHCA strips coverage from 24 million Americans and eliminates the pre-existing conditions protection. It would skyrocket premiums for everybody from cancer survivors to pregnant women.

Unfortunately, AHCA 2.0 has buy-in from the Freedom Caucus, the uber-conservative group of Republicans who sunk the previous version. And word on the street is the House plans to vote on it… TODAY.

So, please, even if you've called before on this issue, now's the time to pick up the phone and call again. We NEED to keep hammering our reps on this.  Don't let them destroy your health insurance coverage without a fight.

WHO TO CALL: Rep. Steve Scalise (1st District) Washington: (202) 225-3015 Metairie: (504) 837-1259

Rep. Cedric Richmond (2nd District) Washington: (202) 225-6636 New Orleans: (504)288-3777

Because of how Congressional districts are drawn, New Orleans residents have either Richmond or Scalise as their representative. If you don't know who your representative is, you can look it up by entering your home address on the U.S. House of Representatives website.

Reminders: Identify where you're calling from (town and zip code is fine) so they know you're an actual constituent. Only call your own representative. Be concise - the office will get through more calls that way. Be polite and don't argue with the staffer - they don't set policy.  If you get a voicemail, then leave a message. And if you get a busy signal -- call back later!

Sample script

Hi, my name is [Name] from New Orleans, zip code 70118 [or wherever you're from]. I don't need a response.

I'm calling because I wanted to remind Rep [NAME] that the ACA is the law of the land. I will not tolerate any more time wasted on TrumpCare, which would take away care from 24 million people and cut Medicaid by $880 billion dollars in order to give tax cuts to the wealthy, insurance companies, and other big corporations. So please stop wasting time trying to replace Obamacare with TrumpCare, and fix the law where it needs fixing instead.  To be clear, I want Rep [NAME] to vote NO on TrumpCare.

Thank you for your time and your hard work answering the phones.
