Demand Equal Pay In Louisiana

Louisiana has the second largest gender wage gap in the nation. Women are paid 68 cents for every dollar paid to men.

There are 2 bills to be introduced in the Louisiana Legislative Session (which begins April 10th) which are aimed at addressing this issue, in 2 different ways. The first is a bill in the Senate, sponsored by State Senator J.P. Morrell, which will require that men and women be paid equally for comparable jobs. The second is a bill in the House, sponsored by State Representative Helena Moreno, which prohibits employer retaliation against an employee who discusses wage information. (Retaliation, or the threat thereof, for discussing wages is one way pay inequality continues to exist unchallenged.)

Let's call our state legislators and ask them to support these measures NOW, so they know there's constituent interest in getting these bills passed. We'll continue to follow up on this issue once the legislative session starts, too.

If you do not know who your state Senator and Representatives are, go to www.legis.la.gov. Click on "Who are my Legislators?" on the left side of the Home page, enter your address. Then click on your Senators/ Reps name to be taken to their websites and their contact info. It's actually really quick to do, promise.

WHO TO CALL (example – your reps may differ!):

    REP: Stephanie Hilferty:  (504) 885-4154
    SEN. Conrad Appel: (504) 838-5550

Reminders: Identify where you're calling from (town and zip code is fine) so they know you're an actual constituent. Only call your own representatives. Be concise - the office will get through more calls that way. Be polite and don't argue with the staffer - they don't set policy.  If you get a voicemail, then leave a message. And if you get a busy signal -- call back later!

I am calling to request Representative [Name] support HB 222, which would prohibit employer retaliation against an employee who discusses wage information. Louisiana has the second largest gender wage gap in the nation, and retaliation for discussing wages is one way that

inequalities of pay continue to exist unchallenged.
