558,000. That's how many Louisiana residents stand to lose health insurance coverage if the Affordable Care Act is repealed, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
All weekend House Republicans -- including our own Steve Scalise -- have been whipping their moderate colleagues into voting for the disastrous AHCA bill that would remove health insurance coverage from 24 million people nationwide. And they're close to getting enough votes to pass. Real close.
I know you've called before about this. I know you're sick of calling about this. I am too. But we have to keep those phones ringing. Between revoking Medicaid funding and removing the pre-existing conditions protections, people will die if this bill gets made into law.
So call your Reps. (And call your Senators too, if you have the time, so that they can't say, as Cassidy did, that he hasn't gotten any calls in favor of the ACA/against AHCA.)
WHO TO CALL:
Rep. Steve Scalise (1st District) Washington: (202) 225-3015 Metairie: (504) 837-1259
Rep. Cedric Richmond (2nd District) Washington: (202) 225-6636 New Orleans: (504) 288-3777
Because of how Congressional districts are drawn, New Orleans residents have either Richmond or Scalise as their representative. If you don't know who your representative is, you can look it up by entering your home address on the U.S. House of Representatives website.
Sen. Cassidy - DC OFFICE: (202) 224-5824 and METAIRIE OFFICE: (504) 838-0130
Sen. Kennedy - DC OFFICE: (202) 224-4623 and LAFAYETTE OFFICE (337) 269-5980
Reminders: Identify where you're calling from (town and zip code is fine) so they know you're an actual constituent. Only call your own representative. Be concise - the office will get through more calls that way. Be polite and don't argue with the staffer - they don't set policy. If you get a voicemail, then leave a message. And if you get a busy signal -- call back later!
Hi, my name is [Name] from New Orleans, zip code 70118 [or wherever you're from]. I don't need a response.
I'm calling to voice my strong opposition to TrumpCare. I do not want the Affordable Care Act repealed or replaced, and I want Congress to support the existing law of the land and fix what's broken about it. Congress is responsible for ensuring that our existing health care system works, and I want Rep. [NAME] to know I will hold him accountable for any action that makes health care more expensive, or that drives insurance companies out of the market place.
Thank you for your time and your hard work answering the phones.
