Call of the Day: Demand A Special Prosecutor

Tuesday night Trump fired FBI Director Jim Comey – or, at least, had his bodyguard do it.  (True story.)  The reason?  Trump was growing increasingly enraged by the continuing Russia investigation into his campaign dealings.

Wednesday morning, Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell could have showed some spine and leadership and called for a special, independent prosecutor who couldn't be fired by Trump.  He didn't.  Instead, he dismissed the idea as something that would "impede work already being done."

We can't let this stand.

Our president has not divested from his businesses.  His family members are both running his corporation and serving in prominent national roles.  The Trump Corporation has proudly publicized the special business relationships it shares with various Russian entities, even as a close Trump associate (Flynn) has been fired for negotiating with the Russians to drop sanctions, another had actively worked for the Russians before joining the campaign (Manafort), and a third (Page) was personally recruited by the Kremlin.

The much-trumpeted Senatorial investigation into this is a joke.  It has zero full time staff, with hardly any professional investigators.  The Senate made a big show of starting this investigation, and it could bare important fruit, but they have to actually conduct it in earnest.  We need a special prosecutor, and we need it NOW.

Rep. Steve Scalise - DC OFFICE: (202) 225-3015 and METAIRIE OFFICE: (504) 837-1259

Rep. Cedric Richmond - DC OFFICE: (202) 225-6636 and NEW ORLEANS OFFICE: (504) 288-3777

Because of how Congressional districts are drawn, New Orleans residents have either Richmond or Scalise as their representative.  If you don't know who your representative is, you can look it up by entering your home address on the U.S. House of Representatives website.

Sen. Bill Cassidy - DC OFFICE: (202) 224-5824 and METAIRIE OFFICE: (504) 838-0130

Sen. John Kennedy - DC OFFICE: (202) 224-4623 and LAFAYETTE OFFICE:  (337) 269-5980

Reminders: Identify where you're calling from (town and zip code is fine) so they know you're an actual constituent.  Be concise - the office will get through more calls that way.  Be polite and don't argue with the staffer - they don't set policy.  If you get a voicemail, then leave a message.  And if you get a busy signal -- call back later!

Sample script:

Hi, my name is [Name] from New Orleans, zip code 70118 [or wherever you're from].  I don't need a response.

I am calling to let the Senator/Representative know that I want him to call for a special independent prosecutor in the investigation into the Trump campaign's dealings with Russia, especially in the wake of Trump's shocking firing of the man leading the FBI's investigation.  Moreover, I want this investigation to be fully funded, independently staffed, and as open as the classification levels allow.  It has never been more important for the Senator/Representative to put country before party.

Thank you for your time and your work answering phones.
