Today, May 23rd, the House Judiciary Committee will vote on three immigration bills that would drastically juice up immigration enforcement.
These bills would step up deportation, expand ICE's power, limit the granting of new visas (and revoke existing ones), levy punishment for cities deemed to be following "sanctuary cities", and even arm deportation officers with M4 rifles.
HR 2431, the Davis-Oliver Act, would boost the ability of state and local law enforcement agencies to enact their own immigration policies, including the ability to revoke visas, ramp up ICE activity, implement sanctuary city sanctions, and increase criminal penalties for undocumented immigrants.
HR 2406 and HR 2407, meanwhile, would act as official authorizations for ICE and US Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS). The ICE bill in particular would increase the number of ICE deportation officers and give each the aforementioned M4 rifle.
Not only do these bills demonize undocumented immigrants, but would further exacerbate the problem of mass incarceration in Louisiana, the "incarceration capital of the world". We have to help put a stop to them.
WHO TO CALL:
Representative Steve Scalise - in DC at (202) 225-3015, and in Metairie at (504) 837-1259
Representative Cedric Richmond - in DC at (202) 225-6636, and in New Orleans at (504) 288-3777
Because of how Congressional districts are drawn, New Orleans residents have either Richmond or Scalise as their representative. If you don't know who your representative is, you can look it up by entering your home address on the U.S. House of Representatives website.
Reminders: Identify where you're calling from (town and zip code is fine) so they know you're an actual constituent. Only call your own representative. Be concise - the office will get through more calls that way. Be polite and don't argue with the staffer - they don't set policy. If you get a voicemail, then leave a message. And if you get a busy signal -- call back later!
Hi, my name is [Name] from New Orleans, zip code 70118 [or wherever you're from]. I don't need a response.
I'm calling because I want Rep. [NAME] to vote against HR 2431, HR 2406 and HR 2407, should they make it out of committee. I believe that the bills would ramp up harassment of undocumented immigrants, strain our law enforcement agencies, and increase mass incarceration in our already-overburdened state.
Thank you for your time and your work answering phones.
