Call of the Day: Oppose Trump's White House Invite to a Mass Murderer

Trump has invited Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte to the White House, who has been accused of gross human rights violations, including the extrajudicial, mass murder of thousands of his own citizens.  More incredibly, Trump did so (allegedly) without consulting the State Department.

But, there is a Trump Tower in Manila and Duterte appointed the chairman of the building's development company, Jose E. B. Antonio, as an envoy to Washington for trade, investment and economic affairs.

Does Trump suck up to dictators because he fancies himself one, or because he makes money off them?  We can't know for sure until we know exactly what his potential financial conflicts of interest are.

Today’s call has three options- you can call your representative, your senators OR both!  It’s up to you!  Just remember, if you call your senators, ask them to support S. 26.  If you call your congressmen, ask them to support H.R. 306.

WHO TO CALL:

Rep. Steve Scalise (1st District) Washington:  (202) 225-3015, and- Metairie:  (504) 837-1259

Rep. Cedric Richmond (2nd District) Washington:  (202) 225-6636, and New Orleans:  (504)288-3777

Because of how Congressional districts are drawn, New Orleans residents have either Richmond or Scalise as their representative. If you don't know who your representative is, you can look it up by entering your home address on the U.S.House of Representatives website.

Sen. Bill Cassidy - Washington (202) 224-5824, and Metairie: (504) 838-0130

Sen. John Kennedy - Washington (202) 224-4623, and Lafayette: (337) 269-5980

Reminders: Identify where you're calling from (town and zip code is fine) so they know you're an actual constituent.  Only call your own representative.  Be concise - the office will get through more calls that way.  Be polite and don't argue with the staffer - they don't set policy.  If you get a voicemail, then leave a message. And if you get a busy signal -- call back later!

Sample script-

Hi, my name is [Name] from New Orleans, zip code 70118 [or wherever you're from].  I don't need a response.

I'm calling because I'm concerned that the President has invited Duterte to the White House despite Duterte’s human rights violations.  Due to Duterte’s record and the fact that the Trump organization has properties in Manilla, it is not clear whether the President is acting in the best interest of the United States or in the best interest of the Trump Organization.  The American people deserve to know what Trump’s financial entanglements are, and part of this requires releasing his tax returns.  That's why I want Sen/Rep [NAME] to cosponsor and support the Presidential Tax Transparency Act [H.R. 305 for Scalise/Richmond; S.26 for Cassidy/Kennedy].

Thank you for your time and your hard work answering the phones.
