Call of the Day: Oppose The Return Of Lifetime Caps

(NOTE:  There's a Bonus Call on Trump Jr./Russia at the end of this Daily Action! )

The Senate will not vote on the Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA, aka TrumpCare) this week as planned, due to Senator John McCain's blood clot surgery.  We wish the Senator a safe and speedy recovery.

That means we should see a Congressional Budget Office (CBO) score on the revised TrumpCare bill before the vote.  But in unprecedented (or unpresidented?) news, the White House is already casting doubt on the non-partisan, independent score, calling it "little more than fake news."

It's not fake news that TrumpCare would devastate the American people.

It's not fake news, for example, that the bill would bring back lifetime caps, meaning insurers could limit how much money they'll spend on medical treatment for individuals.  It's not fake news that these lifetime caps would disproportionately hurt anybody facing high-cost treatments, such as cancer, chronic illness, or severe disability.  And it's not fake news that the lifetime caps would hurt the 849,000 Louisianans living with pre-existing conditions the most, bankrupting them and their families, and resulting in inadequate care, even death.

So call your Senators today and remind them that TrumpCare does not pass Senator Cassidy's "Jimmy Kimmel Test."  And please come to visit Senator Cassidy's Metairie office today at noon, and let your voice be heard in person.

Senator Cassidy and Senator Kennedy

Senator Bill Cassidy - DC OFFICE: (202) 224-5824 and METAIRIE OFFICE: (504) 838-0130 (NOTE: If you can't get through to Metairie, try one of the other offices, such as Monroe: (318) 324-2111, Lake Charles: (337) 493-5398, or Alexandria: Phone: (318) 448-7176)

Senator John Kennedy - DC OFFICE: (202) 224-4623 and MONROE OFFICE (318) 361-1489

Reminders:  Identify where you're calling from (town and zip code is fine) so they know you're an actual constituent.  Be concise - the office will get through more calls that way.  Be polite and don't argue with the staffer - they don't set policy.  If you get a voicemail, then leave a message.  And if you get a busy signal -- call back later!

Sample Script:

Hi, my name is [Your Name] from New Orleans, zip code [Your Zip Code].

I’m calling today because I want the Senator to vote no on the BCRA.  I strongly oppose TrumpCare's rollback of the ACA's protection from lifetime caps for patients.  Lifetime caps disproportionately harm people facing high-cost treatments, and would be devastating for the 849,000 Louisianans with pre-existing conditions.  There is no change, not extra funding nor policy tweaks, that could make this something the Senator should support.

Thank you for your time and your hard work answering the phones. Stay safe out there.

The more we learn about Trump Jr.'s June 2016 meeting, the worse it becomes.  Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner (his son-in-law), and Trump's campaign manager Paul Manafort were all in the room, conspiring with a foreign nation to win an election.  It's time to find out else they know.

Hi, my name is [Your Name] from New Orleans, Louisiana [or wherever you're from].

I’m calling today to request the committee call Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and Paul Manafort to publicly testify about the details of their June 9, 2016 meeting with Russian officials, and any other similar meetings with Russian officials they have failed to disclose.  I am deeply concerned that this meeting reflects the Trump team's possible conspiracy with Russia to interfere with the 2016 election.

Thank you for your time and your hard work answering the phones.
