(See below after the script for a second, special call!)
The Senate just will not let TrumpCare die.
Wednesday, President Trump had lunch with most of the Senate in order to berate them into passing some healthcare legislation, ANY healthcare legislation. Later that day, Senators met to hash out a repeal-only plan that would appease conservatives and moderates alike. (Confirmed No votes Collins, Murkowski and Paul weren't in the room, so I'm not sure how much ground they could truly cover.)
Repealing the Affordable Care Act (ACA) without immediate replacement would have a devastating impact on the country, and on Louisiana specifically, according to the CBO and LA Budget Project:
- It eliminates the Medicaid expansion by 2020, leaving 430,000 Louisianans without healthcare coverage.
- 86% of the Louisianans who buy insurance through the individual market would see the federal subsidies they use to pay for that insurance vanish. These subsidies, which average $435, cover 79% of the monthly premium cost.
- An estimated 558,000 Louisianans would lose their insurance coverage, whether they get that insurance through the individual market or through their employers.
- Louisiana would lose an estimated 37,000 jobs by 2019, due to decreases in federal healthcare spending.
We have to keep pressing our Senators to oppose repeal-only, and to do so openly. Remember, just a few days ago, Sen. Cassidy wrote this:
"There must be a replace with repeal. Trump campaigned promising a replace bill that continued coverage, cared for those with preexisting conditions, and eliminated individual and employer mandates while lowering premiums… Americans are asking us to set aside partisanship when it comes to issues of greatest concern."
Let's hold him to those words.
WHO TO CALL:
Senator Cassidy and Senator. Kennedy
Senator Bill Cassidy - DC OFFICE: (202) 224-5824 and METAIRIE OFFICE: (504) 838-0130 (NOTE: If you can't get through to Metairie, try one of the other offices, such as Monroe: (318) 324-2111, Lake Charles: (337) 493-5398, or Alexandria: Phone: (318) 448-7176)
Senator John Kennedy - DC OFFICE: (202) 224-4623 and MONROE OFFICE (318) 361-1489
Reminders: Identify where you're calling from (town and zip code is fine) so they know you're an actual constituent. Be concise - the office will get through more calls that way. Be polite and don't argue with the staffer - they don't set policy. If you get a voicemail, then leave a message. And if you get a busy signal -- call back later!
Hi, my name is [Your Name] from New Orleans, zip code 70118 [or wherever you're from].
I’m calling today because I want the Senator to vote NO on ANY bill that repeals the ACA without a replacement plan. Repeal-only would result more than half a million Louisianans losing their health insurance, even those who get insurance through their employer. It would also result in 37,000 lost jobs, due to decreased federal healthcare spending in our state. This is unacceptable.
[FOR SENATOR CASSIDY ONLY: Senator Cassidy wrote in the Washington Post that "there must be a replace with repeal". I want him to stick by that.]
Replace-without-repeal does not pass the "Jimmy Kimmel test." I want the Senator to vote NO on a repeal of the ACA without replacement, and instead push for a bipartisan approach to fix the issues with the ACA.
Thank you for your time and your hard work answering the phones. Stay safe out there.
BONUS CALL: DEMAND THE HOUSE STOP STALLING ON SANCTIONS
On June 15, the Senate passed a new sanctions bill targeting Russia and Iran; the bill passed with an overwhelming majority (98-2).
The bill would give Congress the ability to review – and reject – any proposal to lift sanctions against Russia by the Trump Administration. Despite overwhelming bipartisan support, Trump opposes this bill, and is rumored to be pressuring House Republicans to "slow and block" the legislation.
Now there are reports that Trump may try to return the Russian compounds seized as a penalty for interfering in the 2016 election. It's time to call the House Committee on Foreign Affairs AGAIN to get this bill moving once again in the House.
WHO TO CALL:
House Committee on Foreign Affairs: (202) 225-5021
Sample Script (adapted from 5calls.org):
Hi, my name is [Your Name] from New Orleans, Louisiana. I'm calling to urge the House Committee on Foreign Affairs to support S.722, which would limit the ability of the Trump administration to remove Russian Sanctions. The ongoing investigations into the Trump administration's connections with Russia make Congressional oversight on any changes to sanctions absolutely essential. Thanks for your time and your hard work answering the phones.
