Call of the Day: Urge Your Senators To Vote No On MTP

The Senate will be voting on a Motion to Proceed (MTP) on Tuesday.

Motion to Proceed on what, exactly?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Your guess is as good as theirs.

That's because nobody knows exactly which of the various versions of TrumpCare the Senate will vote on this week – not even the Senate.  Is it the Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA)?  Is it the House version, the American Health Care Act (AHCA)?  Is it the 2015 repeal-only bill?  Is it something completely new and totally different?  Who knows!  Not our senators!

This is ridiculous.  Every version of this bill is bad.  The CBO thinks they're bad.  Patient's rights groups and doctors' industry associations think they're bad.  The only person who seems to like TrumpCare is Trump himself, and not because he actually knows what's in it, but because he think it'll help him in #winning.

Today, call your Senators and tell them to vote NO on the Motion to Proceed.  Tell them to start over, taking a bipartisan approach to fix the problems in the Affordable Care Act (ACA, aka ObamaCare), rather than trying to squeeze through a terrible bill – whatever it ends up being – in total secrecy.

WHO TO CALL:

Senator Cassidy and Senator Kennedy

Senator Bill Cassidy - DC OFFICE: (202) 224-5824 and METAIRIE OFFICE: (504) 838-0130 (NOTE: If you can't get through to Metairie, try one of the other offices, such as Monroe: (318) 324-2111, Lake Charles: (337) 493-5398, or Alexandria: Phone: (318) 448-7176)

Senator John Kennedy - DC OFFICE: (202) 224-4623 and MONROE OFFICE (318) 361-1489

Reminders: Identify where you're calling from (town and zip code is fine) so they know you're an actual constituent.  Be concise - the office will get through more calls that way.  Be polite and don't argue with the staffer - they don't set policy.  If you get a voicemail, then leave a message.  And if you get a busy signal -- call back later!

Sample Script:

Hi, my name is [Your Name] from New Orleans, zip code 70118 [or wherever you're from].

I'm calling today because I want the Senator to know it is completely unacceptable that the public doesn't know what's in the Senate's healthcare bill that will be voted on this week.  All the versions we've seen have  been terrible for Louisiana:  People will lose their coverage, pre-existing conditions will no longer be covered, annual/lifetime caps will come back, and the Medicaid cuts will devastate our state budget.

So I want the Senator to vote no on the Motion to Proceed whichever bill comes to the floor this week.  I want him to vote no on any repeal-without-replace bill, and I want him to vote no on the BCRA.  I want the Senate to do this again the right way, with public hearings, expert support, and a bipartisan approach, to fix the problems in the ACA.

Thank you for your time and your hard work answering the phones.  Stay safe out there.
