Earlier this year, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security warned that white nationalist groups, like the KKK and the Neo-Nazis, "likely will continue to pose a threat of lethal violence over the next year."
Congressional hearings on white supremacy and domestic terrorism are one effective measure Congress can take to start treating this threat as seriously as it deserves.
Twice, Democrats on the House Committee of Homeland Security have requested hearings on domestic terrorism this year, but it wasn't until after Trump's press conference defending white supremacists at Charlottesville that the Committee chairman finally announced a hearing for September 12.
Hearings have also been requested for the House and Senate Judiciary Committees, but so far, none have been scheduled.
Fortunately, we have an "in" on the Senate Judiciary Committee – our very own Senator Kennedy is a member.
Senator Kennedy has issued vague social media statements condemning violence, generally speaking. But now he has a chance to put action to those words. So let's urge him to do just that.
WHO TO CALL:
Senator John Kennedy
Senator John Kennedy - DC OFFICE: (202) 224-4623 and MONROE OFFICE (318) 361-1489
Reminders: Identify where you're calling from (town and zip code is fine) so they know you're an actual constituent. Be concise - the office will get through more calls that way. Be polite and don't argue with the staffer - they don't set policy. If you get a voicemail, then leave a message. And if you get a busy signal -- call back later!
Hi, my name is [Your Name] from New Orleans, zip code 70118 [or wherever you're from].
I'm calling today to ask Senator Kennedy to request the Senate Judiciary Committee hold hearings on the growing threat of white supremacy and domestic terrorism. As the horrifying events in Charlottesville show, our failure to address this threat puts the security of all Americans at risk. Congress must hold hearings to thoroughly investigate the risk white supremacists pose. Senator Kennedy is in a unique position to help instigate these hearings, and I urge him to take a moral stand and do what's right for his constituents.
Thank you for your time and your hard work answering the phones. Stay safe out there.
