Call Of The Day: Oppose Nomination Of Homophobic Radio Host For Top USDA Scientist

Bafflingly, Sam Clovis, radio host and co-chair of the Trump presidential campaign, has been nominated to serve as the USDA's Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics.

The Under Secretary serves as the USDA's top scientist, managing a $3 billion research and education budget.  Usually, the Under Secretary has an advanced degree in science or medicine.  Usually.

Clovis is woefully unqualified for this position:  He lacks a science degree, and he's a self-proclaimed "climate change skeptic" who declared climate science to be "junk science".

Furthermore, as a talk radio host and blogger, Clovis promoted racist birther conspiracies about President Obama and made racist comments about Attorney General Eric Holder.  He also broadcast to his listeners that homosexuality is a choice, and that legalizing same-sex marriage would lead to the legalization of pedophilia.

Especially after Charlottesville, we must urge our Senators to firmly stand against racism, not to mention homophobia and climate change denial.  Opposing the confirmation of Sam Clovis is one such stand they can make.

Sample script-

Hi, my name is [Your Name] from New Orleans, zip code 70118 [or wherever you're from].

I'm calling to urge the Senator to vote against the confirmation of Sam Clovis to be USDA Under Secretary.  It is unacceptable for the USDA's top scientist to be someone without any science background or training, and for the Trump administration to continue endorsing racism and bigotry by appointing someone who promotes birther conspiracies and homophobia.

Thank you for your time, and for your hard work answering the phones.  Stay safe out there.
