Call Of The Day: Tell Senator Cassidy To Seek Bipartisan Solutions On The ACA

Please Note:  There is a special script demanding a town hall from Senator. Kennedy below.

Senate leadership has decided to put the effort to repeal the ACA on the back burner. Nevertheless, our Senator Bill Cassidy persists.

Senator Cassidy visited the White House on Monday to meet with Trump aides and Department of HHS Secretary Tom Price.  The topic of discussion:  the Cassidy-Graham plan to repeal and replace the ACA.  This follows a similar meeting last week with the president.

Not much is known about the Cassidy-Graham plan, except that it would send federal health care funds to the states in the form of block grants.  There's no CBO score on the plan yet, not even legislative text; and little independent analysis exists – though what little there is has already found significant issues with its implementation.  (Read one such analysis by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.  It's not good, ... cutting billions of dollars for millions of people.)

We need to call Senator Cassidy and remind him that he promised a return to regular order and to work on bipartisan solutions that would fix the problems with the ACA, instead of insisting on the failed policy of repeal and replace.

Senator Cassidy

Senator Bill Cassidy - DC OFFICE: (202) 224-5824 and METAIRIE OFFICE: (504) 838-0130 (NOTE: If you can't get through to Metairie, try one of the other offices, such as Monroe: (318) 324-2111, Lake Charles: (337) 493-5398, or Alexandria: Phone: (318) 448-7176)

Reminders:  Identify where you're calling from (town and zip code is fine) so they know you're an actual constituent.  Be concise - the office will get through more calls that way.  Be polite and don't argue with the staffer - they don't set policy.  If you get a voicemail, then leave a message. And if you get a busy signal -- call back later!

Sample Script:

Hi, my name is [Your Name] from New Orleans, zip code 70118 [or wherever you're from].

I'm calling today because I want to encourage Senator Cassidy to abandon his efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act with his own Cassidy-Graham plan, and instead advocate for a bipartisan approach to healthcare reform.  That means committee hearings, getting expert testimony and CBO scores, and a return to regular order.  The Senate has wasted too much time already on this issue, when it's clear that the majority of Louisianans and Americans instead want the ACA fixed, not replaced.

Thank you for your time and your hard work answering the phones.

While you're on the phone, why don't you also…

Senator Kennedy has been in office for over six months.  He hasn't held a single town hall or constituent event in the state (though he's had plenty of time to write editorials criticizing New Orleans).

August recess is upon us.  It's time Senator Kennedy stop hiding from his constituents and hold a damn town hall already.

Sample Script:

Hi, my name is [Your Name] from New Orleans, zip code 70118 [or wherever you're from].

I'm calling today because I want to know when the Senator is holding a town hall in my area.  It has been six months and he hasn't had a single town hall or constituent event.  This is frustrating, as I have questions I'd like to get answers to.

Thank you for your time and your hard work answering the phones. Stay safe out there.
