Representative Ron DeSantis (R-FL) has sponsored a budget amendment that would cut off funding for the Special Counsel investigation – just six months after the amendment passes.
The proposal would also prevent the investigation of crimes committed before the start of Trump's presidential campaign in June 2015.
DeSantis often defends Trump on Russia-related news stories. He defended Trump when the president thanked Putin for imposing sanctions on the US, and he questioned if an FBI investigation into the Donald Trump, Jr. meeting with the Russians was warranted.
There are hundreds of proposed amendments to the 2018 budget, and the House Rules Committee decides which of these amendments will move forward to be considered by the full House of Representatives. Therefore, it's important that we call them too, as well as our representatives, to let them know that the American people support the Mueller investigation and want to see it continue until its completion.
WHO TO CALL:
House Committee on Rules AND Representative Scalise OR Representative Richmond
House Committee On Rules: (202) 225-9191
Because of how Congressional districts are drawn, New Orleans residents have either Richmond or Scalise as their representative. If you don't know who your representative is, you can look it up by entering your home address on the U.S. House of Representatives website.
Representative Cedric Richmond: DC OFFICE: (202) 225-6636
Representative Steve Scalise: DC OFFICE: (202) 225-3015
Reminders: Identify where you're calling from (town and zip code is fine) so they know you're an actual constituent. Only call your own representative. Be concise - the office will get through more calls that way. Be polite and don't argue with the staffer - they don't set policy. If you get a voicemail, then leave a message. And if you get a busy signal -- call back later!
Hi, my name is [Your Name] from New Orleans, zip code 70002 [or wherever you're from].
I'm calling today to express my concerns about the DeSantis amendment for the 2018 spending package that would defund the special investigation Robert Mueller is conducting into the Trump campaign's possible collusion and conspiracy with Russia. Any effort to end this investigation would take away the public's right to know the truth. I'm asking that [the committee not move this amendment forward to the House floor]/[the Representative oppose any such efforts and work to maintain sufficient funding for the investigation].
Thank you for your time and your hard work answering the phones. Stay safe out there.
