Call Of The Day: Restrict Trump's Nuclear Launch Authority

With the recent false alarm in Hawaii, this is probably the only time we were fortunate that Donald Trump was on a golf course, otherwise, with his immature, reactionary personality he'd have probably blown up half the planet.  Additionally, Donald Trump’s reckless behavior toward North Korea and his ill-informed statements about the nuclear arsenal have put the presidential power to launch a nuclear first strike in the forefront of the minds of many Americans.  In light of his alarming actions, we are long overdue for a thorough reconsideration of the president’s ability to quickly launch weapons with the potential to end life on Earth.

Early in 2017, Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) and Representative Ted Lieu (D-CA) introduced S. 200 and H.R. 669, bills that would prevent the president from launching a nuclear first strike before Congress has passed a declaration of war.  Together, the bills send the clear message that America will not be a nuclear aggressor, but will instead use its weapons to defend itself and its allies.  As Senator Markey said, "Neither President Trump, nor any other president, should be allowed to use nuclear weapons except in response to a nuclear attack.”
