At midnight on Friday, December 21st, the US federal government entered into partial shutdown (the third shutdown in 2018) because Congress and the Trump administration cannot come to a spending agreement. Under contention is $5 billion demanded by the Trump administration for construction of a southern border wall. Though Democrats have offered $1.3 billion in funding for border fencing, Trump has refused to negotiate, stating he would "be proud to shutdown the government" if his demands are not met.
The White House's plan to build a border wall has met resistance in Congress from Democrats, Independents, and moderate Republicans. Immigration experts from both sides of the aisle have agreed a wall will not deter immigration by undocumented people but will instead simply make attempted border crossings more deadly. Trump's fight for a "big, beautiful wall" is destabilizing our country and federal agencies, including the Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and the EPA, will not be able to pay their employees.

Representative Cedric Richmond - in DC at (202) 225-6636, and in New Orleans at (504) 288-3777 OR Representative Steve Scalise - in DC at (202) 225-3015, and in Metairie at (504) 837-1259
Hello. My name is [Your Name] and I'm an active voter from New Orleans, ZIP Code 70118 [Or wherever you’re from].
I’m calling to object to any 2019 federal budget that funds the construction of a US-Mexico border wall. Congress should not concede to Trump’s threats to continue to shut down the government when working to develop a budget; further, Congress has the votes to override Trump's veto of a spending bill without wall funding. The wall will not improve our border security and will cost taxpayers billions of dollars better spent elsewhere.
Thank you for your time and attention.
