Call Of The Day: Demand Congress take action for common sense gun safety AGAIN!!!!

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. This weekend, 29 people were killed in mass shootings. The mass shooting in El Paso is being investigated as a hate crime against the Latino community. On average 100 Americans will be fatally shot every day.  We don’t have to live like this. Tell Congress to take action NOW.

HR 8 - would prohibit most person-to-person firearm transfers unless a background check can be conducted, aiming to close a potential loophole allowing the transfer of firearms without a background check at gun shows or between individuals.

HR 1112- would extend to at least 10 days the amount of time firearms dealers must wait for a response from the background check system before the sale can proceed. Currently, they can make the sale if they haven’t received a response in three days.

Three calls to make:  Senators Kennedy and Cassidy, and Representative Richmond or Scalise

Because of how Congressional districts are drawn, New Orleans residents have either Richmond or Scalise as their representative.  If you don't know who your representative is, you can look it up by entering your home address on the U.S. House of Representatives website.

Representative Cedric Richmond - in DC at (202) 225-6636, and in New Orleans at (504) 288-3777
Representative Steve Scalise - in DC at (202) 225-3015, and in Metairie at (504) 837-1259

Sample script:

Hello. My name is [Your Name] and I'm an active voter from New Orleans, ZIP Code 70118 [or wherever you’re from].

  1. (FOR SENATE ONLY) DEMAND the Senate ends its August recess and go back to Washington and pass HR 8 and HR 1112. It has been 5 MONTHS since the House passed HR 8 and the Senate has done nothing. The U.S. has a crisis of gun violence and the Senate MUST ACT now OR WE WILL VOTE YOU OUT. How many more people have to die before the Senate votes on these two bills that an overwhelming majority of Americans support? (info on the bills at the end of the email)

  2. DEMAND the ( senator / representative ) denounce white supremacy and denounce the racist tweets/statements from Trump. It is not acceptable for the ( senator / representative ) to not denounce tweets that mention invasions, infestations, or other white supremacy code words. We will VOTE the ( senator /representative ) out if he can’t act with courage and denounce white supremacy.

  3.  I'm also calling to urge the ( senator / representative ) take action to reduce the epidemic of gun violence in the United States by

  • Funding evidence-based community anti-violence programs, like Ceasefire, which have been shown to reduce shootings

  • Reinstating a federal ban on the purchase of high-capacity magazines and military-style assault weapons, which is supported by at least 65% of Americans.
